Ken Hill, a prominent entrepreneur from Six Nations of the Grand River Territory, has died at the age of 62.
Hill was a co-founder and co-owner of Grand River Enterprises (GRE), a successful and wealthy company that manufactures and exports many popular brands of cigarettes.
The company announced his death on Monday.
“It was with deepest sympathy that Grand River Enterprises announces the passing of one of our company shareholders Kenneth R. Hill,” said president Steve Williams in a statement.
“He was a strong Six Nation community supporter, involved in a number of charitable initiatives and local businesses.”
Hill also served as GRE’s marketing director and was active the company’s operations in the United States and overseas in Europe, the statement said.
He also held various other business interests within the Six Nations community, which is located 30 km south of Hamilton, Ont.
“He is survived by his children and extended family,” the statement added.
“We, his Grand River Enterprises family, would like to extend our condolences to his family and ask for privacy for the family at this time.”
The statement did not provide more information about the location, date, time or cause of death.
He was reportedly in Miami, Fla, when he died.
Hill was a member of the Mohawk Nation
He was reputed to be one of the wealthiest Indigenous businesspeople in the country.
