WINNIPEG–Winnipeg police say they’ve arrested an alleged serial killer responsible for the deaths of three First Nations women.
Shawn Cameron Lamb, 52, has been charged with three counts of second-degree murder in relation to the deaths of Tanya Jane Nepinak, 31, Carolyn Sinclair, 25, and Lorna Blacksmith, 18.
All three women disappeared within the space of five months around the same street, Ellice Ave, known locally as Winnipeg’s “street of tears.” Nepinak disappeared last September, Sinclair in December and Blacksmith disappeared in January of this year.
According to court records, police allege that Blacksmith was killed Jan. 12, while Sinclair was killed Dec. 18, 2011, and Nepinak was murdered on Sept. 13, 2011.
Sinclair and Blacksmith’s bodies were found in dumpsters while police are still searching for Nepinak’s remains.
The families of the women have long claimed they believed the women’s deaths were all connected. Now it appears their suspicions have come true.
Winnipeg police said Lamb was on their radar as a possible suspect and that they finally managed to question him last week in connection to a serious sexual assault.
Police said evidence then surfaced linking Lamb to the killing of the three women.
Lamb is also facing charges, stemming from Oct. 30, 2011, of sexual assault, sexual interference and procuring a child under the age of 18 to work in the sex-trade.
Winnipeg police said they are in contact with other police agencies across the country, probing whether Lamb could be connected to other killing.
Lamb has an extensive rap sheet dating back to at least 2004.
