His first days as minister saw him faced with everything from a suicide crisis in Saskatchewan to a looming compensation order at the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal.
It wouldn’t get any easier for Marc Miller after he was sworn in as Indigenous Services minister last November.
Soon blockades popped up across the country in solidarity with the Wet’suwet’en hereditary chiefs grinding many parts of Canada to a halt for weeks.
Then just when that looked to be quieting down a bug called the novel coronavirus was unleashed in China quickly spreading across the world and eventually into First Nations here in Canada.
Miller joined Nation to Nation on our final episode of the season.
He talks about the trepidation he felt after agreeing to the job while he kept it a secret for a week and how his job is help First Nations lead, opposed to a top-down approach that has been so common when it comes to how Canada consults with First Nations.
