Reeling from a recent spike in suicides and suicide attempts, a Vancouver Island First Nation took the drastic measure of calling a local state of emergency.
Usually reserved for natural disasters, the community’s leadership is hoping the declaration spurs federal and provincial government action.
Within weeks of each other, four people killed themselves by hanging.
Since January, First Nations health care workers have received over 50 calls for help.
