Former Sagkeeng First Nation high school principal and community leader Claude Guimond pleaded guilty earlier this week to two counts of second-degree murder in Winnipeg court.
Claude Guimond was charged with the vigilante killing of two men – 43-year-old Jody Brown and 35-year-old Steven Chevrefils – who were found shot to death in a well-known drug house in the nearby community of St. Georges, Man.
The Winnipeg Free Press reported Guimond had been drinking when he painted his face black and dressed in camouflage gear in February of 2017 before going to the house armed with a gun. Guimond told court he regretted his actions.
Both the Crown and defence recommend a life sentence with no chance of parole for 14 years.
Meanwhile, the community remains divided on the matter.
Some comments on social media say Guimond did the community about an hour and a half north of Winnipeg a favour and this wouldn’t have happened if police had done their jobs.
Others say no one, even suspected drug dealers, deserves to be killed.
Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Brenda Keyser plans to sentence Guimond in May.
