Ontario Coroner Dirk Huyer met with leaders from Nishnawbe Aski Nation to update the chiefs on two important cases.
Huyer told the chiefs in assembly they’re at the beginning stages of re-investigating nine deaths of First Nations people in Thunder Bay.
“We want the communities, the families and those in Thunder Bay as well as more broadly to have a greater confidence in the outcome, greater confidence in the outcome and results of these which we’re hoping will help translate to help to contribute to restoring the confidence of the public,” Huyer said.
The re-investigations come from a recommendation from the office of the independent police review director last year.
The nine cases include four First Nations youth whose deaths were examined in the seven student inquest in 2015.
The investigations are being led by retired provincial police deputy superintendent Ken Leppard.
