The Hiawatha First Nation in Ontario has signed a land claim agreement with the federal government, along with two other First Nations.
The claim stems from the loss of several islands on Rice Lake. Local First Nations would farm and harvest rice on the islands, but when the Trent Severn Waterway was completed in 1920, the islands — and the lifestyle — were lost underneath the rising water.
Hiawatha First Nation, Curve Lake First Nation, and Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation will split the settlement of $71 million.
APTN National News reporter Donna Smith spoke with Hiawatha community members about the settlement and what the money could do for the community.
