Assembly of First Nations National Chief Shawn Atleo says that the 2012 federal budget “maintains the commitment from the Crown-First Nations Gathering”, in comments following the budget’s release.
Atleo had pushed for $500 million to fix First Nations education. The budget, released last week, allocates $275 million for education, along with $330.8 million for water infrastructure and $27 million for job training under the Urban Aboriginal Strategy.
Atleo also said that for the federal government, fulfilling the 2008 apology “means walking with First Nations in Canada”.
APTN National News reporter Annette Francis caught up with Atleo following the budget’s release. Here’s his reaction, in full.
