Venecia Audy died when she was just three years old. Her mother, Melissa Audy, and the mother’s boyfriend, Jason Allan Kines, claimed that Venecia had fallen down the steps in front of their house in Bowsman, Manitoba.
But autopsies revealed that Venecia suffered injuries that were inconsistent with the couple’s story, including lacerations of the liver. Some of the most striking evidence suggested that Venecia had been physically and sexually abused by Kines.
Despite the evidence, Kines was acquitted of first degree murder, sexual interference, and aggravated sexual assault. He was convicted of failing to provide the necessities of life, with a sentence of ten months in jail.
Audy’s grandmother and aunt spoke to APTN National News reporter Tiar Wilson about the case. They were Venecia’s foster family for much of her life, and this is the first time they’ve spoken to the media about the case since Kines’s conviction in 2009.
We now bring you an exclusive story about Venecia Audy and her family’s search for justice.
