Not having a driver’s license is a huge barrier for many in remote First Nations who are trying to find work in construction and other industries.
So one woman in Terrace, British Columbia is doing something about it.
Lucy Sager, owner of All Nations Driving Academy, said after talking with community and industry leaders, she decided to help try to fill the gap in driver training services in First Nations.
An initial provincial government contract for Sager’s services recently turned into a larger one.
On Aug. 15 the province announced an additional $360,000 to train up to 600 more people in remote communities.
Sager says her long-term goal is to help build capacity in communities so they can offer their own driving training.
