Winnipeg’s Indigenous community is mourning the loss of Joseph Meconse.
The war veteran and recipient of the Order of Manitoba died Sunday at 77.
Meconse was a well-known Elder and Indigenous rights activist, who devoted time to improving the lives of Aboriginal veterans.
“It’s heartbreaking,” said his daughter, Renata Meconse.
“It just shows how much of an impact he’s had in the community.”

Renata said her father’s passing was sudden.
On Saturday, she said he was supposed to bring his eagle staff to a Winnipeg Jets game and drop the puck, but he was under the weather and decided to stay home.
The next day, he passed away.
Several influential Manitobans paid their respects on social media, including Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister, Winnipeg Mayor Brian Bowman and Sheila North, among others.
“I appreciate that they have remembered him, that’s really kind and moving,” Renata said.
