Alberta child services wants to bring in more Indigenous caretakers to house children in need.
Officials met at the Canadian Native Friendship Centre in Edmonton for an information session to talk about people getting involved.

Maybe if indigenous foster families were better treated or properly supported when the need arises there would be more families willing to do this service.Did you know that if you have a child in your home and he or she turns 18, hes now aged out and no longer has any supports? Even while still in school ? No case managers ,no workers come see them anymore no supports in place even if agreement was signed and in place ,the directors refuse your foster child any supports, period.they tell you it’s now your problem, these children were removed from parents,moved out of community ,had no family contact,you never adopted them,they were governments wards of courts all their lifes then once 18 they are dropped from any access to any supports from the children’s child n family services,I think something has to be done to further assist these children. I URGE foster parents who have children in their care to ask what happens to this 17 year old when he becomes 18 ? I honestly think all what you have done in your home to bring this child to this age and done it well , without much support from the band or children’s services should provide you with at least a thank you but believe me you wont get even that .They will quit paying you. Quit talking to you ,tell you this 18 year old is your responsibility , close your home and you still have this child that no body wants,?? Not even his own family , except you ,cause now you’ve loved him cared for him, tell me what now? DONT wait that long,these children should have been sent home to their own families long ago time to revamp this system it’s broken, it dont work, we are recreating another residential school system , that failed , children’s services failed too..

More Indigenous homes would be more available if the support to foster parents was sufficient for the extended needs. In the community, 33% of Indigenous kids live with disabilities or conditions requiring the same level of care as a disability. When in care, due to insufficient disability supports and subsequent family deterioration, that stat increases to 70 %. These dire stats translate to a 100 % affect rate in the community. Who on earth among Indigenous families would agree to accept the paltry supports foster parents receive, and allow their own family to deteriorate due to lack of supports?? You need to change that Colonist approach. Actually invest!! Do it.
