COVID-19 claims first Indigenous elder in B.C.

When twin sisters Marilyn and Jaclyn think about their mother Cindy Mountain, they can’t help but smile.

She lived in Alert Bay on Coromorant Island – a 40-minute ferry ride from the northern tip of Vancouver Island.

What Mountain, 59, thought was her annual cold, turned out to be the coronavirus.

It made her so sick she died within three weeks, leaving behind four children and many grandchildren.

She is the first First Nations elder to succumb to the deadly virus in B.C.
