Peguis First Nation is now the second First Nation to host Rogers Hometown Hockey after Enoch Cree Nation did it last year.
The weekend festivities began with an opening ceremony which included Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs Grand Chief Arlen Dumas and Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak Grand Chief Garrison Settee alongside Peguis Chief Glenn Hudson.
Tara Slone and Ron MacLean we’re introduced during the ceremony with many other dignitaries.
An alumni game with Peguis players versus NHL alumni followed the opening ceremonies.
The NHL alumni team included the likes of Aaron Asham from Portage la Prairie and Reggie Leach from Riverton Manitoba.
John Chabot from Rogers Hometown Hockey in Cree on APTN also played for the NHL alumni.
The game also saw a very special occasion take place as Frank Beaulieau called the game in the Ojibwe language.
Aside from the on-ice game, the weekend featured many attractions. The Stanley Cup was available, autograph sessions with alumni after the game and various kids activities like ball hockey and hardest shot.
Free concerts graced the main stage all day and towards the end of the evening a round dance was held with the community.
Sunday evening on Roger’s Hometown Hockey in Cree on APTN at 7 p.m. CST the Columbus Blue Jackets will face off against the Vancouver Canucks.
