While federal government has until February to make a decision on the proposed Teck Frontier Mine in northern Alberta, the Fort McKay Metis are already making plans for the economic boost that is expected.

While there has been a lot of opposition against the newest tarsands project, all 14 First Nation and Metis communities in the area have signed an agreement for it.

Fort McKay is located about an hour north of Fort McMurray.

Plans for economic growth, including land set aside for a fire hall, gas station and Tim Horton’s, are in place.

Some people in the area say these improvements wouldn’t be possible without the oil and gas industry.
