Elected First Nations leaders from across Canada were in Whitehorse for a forum on modern treaties.

The forum was hosted by the Assembly of First Nations and was the first time the Yukon territory had hosted the event.

The goal of the forum was to allow First Nation leaders to discuss how best to advance treaty rights more effectively.

“We’re all showing up for each other to be supportive but we’re also showing up to share, and to listen, and to learn,” says Assembly of First Nations Regional Chief Kluane Adamek.

Modern treaties or comprehensive claims are nation to nation relationships between Indigenous peo[ples, the federal and provincial Crown and in some cases a territory.

Comprehensive claims are based on the traditional use and occupancy of land by Indigenous peoples who did not sign treaties.

“It really is about sharing our story right. understanding the issues, where did we come from and how did we get here and then where are we going,” said Adamek.

“So really happy to have a breath and wealth of knowledge shared both from people who negotiated these agreements to also newly elected officials and others who are engaged in implementation of our agreements”
