Canada says it will address wrongs against Metis students who were forced into Saskatchewan residential school

The federal government has announced that it will be righting a wrong that was committed against Metis students who went to one residential school.

After issuing an apology to those students, Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Carolyn Bennett and Indigenous Services Minister Seamus O’Regan signed a memorandum of understanding that the minister said will address this history.

“Today we will sign a memorandum of understanding for the Île-à-la-Crosse exploratory discussions to address the history of the metis students who attended the Île-à-la-Crosse mission boarding school,” Bennett said.

The government said the MOU represents the beginning of the process that will recognize the Metis students who were left out of the Indian Residential School settlement.

The school was actually run by the province of Saskatchewan.

“There’s room in the core governance agreement for the province to come to the table and it is in the provinces best interest and the best interest in all Saskatchewan that we engage fully with the Metis Nation of Saskatchewn,” said Thomas Isaac.
