The Kivaliiq News is reporting “a brutal slaying” of a female in the southern Arctic community of Rankin Inlet.

But Nunavut RCMP say the victim suffered a “sudden death.”

Both sources confirm the death occurred April 26. Police say the woman was 33 years old.

The paper says the woman was accompanying a patient to Winnipeg as a medical escort, when she decided to spend a few nights in Rankin Inlet before continuing on to her home community of Naujaat.

It reported a man was arrested but RCMP say no arrests have been made.

Police noted the major crimes unit and territory’s chief coroner’s office were involved, and an autopsy had been ordered.

“Victim services are available to help anyone affected by this tragedy,” police added in a release.

Rankin Inlet is the capital of the Kivalliq region of Nunavut. It has a population of about 2,800 people.
