High winds are delaying the prime minister’s planned apology in Iqaluit Thursday.

Justin Trudeau was scheduled to apologize for how Inuit patients were treated in southern Canada between the 1940s and 1960s where they were sent with Tuberculosis (TB).

However, his plane has been unable to land in the Nunavut capital.

Survivors say some patients were mistreated in sanatoriums, some died, and their remains weren’t returned to their home communities.

APTN Investigates producer Holly Moore chronicled some of the problems in this documentary The Cure Was Worse.

The plane carrying Trudeau, which left Ottawa Thursday morning, was diverted to Goose Bay, Labrador.

The apology has been on the calendar for almost two years and is drawing people from across the territory.

TB is still an active health problem in Nunavut, and the prime minister is expected to speak on that, as well.
