Judge rules Thunder Bay man to stand trial for murder in death of Barbara Kentner

An Ontario judge ruled Monday that a Thunder Bay man will go to trial for second-degree murder in the death of Barbara Kentner.

Brayden Bushby is alleged to have thrown a trailer hitch at the late 34-year-old Anishinaabe mother.

Bushby was charged with second-degree murder after Kentner died on July 17, 2018, six months after she was hit in the stomach with the trailer hitch.

Bushby, 18 at the time of the incident, was originally charged with aggravated assault. The charges were upgraded following Kentner’s death.

The judge’s decision Monday comes after Bushby’s preliminary hearings concluded last October. It was supposed to happen last week but the judge asked for more time.

Kentner’s family had traveled to Thunder Bay last week for the decision that was postponed until Monday.

Kentner’s teenage daughter Serena said waiting for justice has been difficult.

“This has been going on for so long and my mom, she deserves justice, and I deserve to finally be able to grieve,” she said. “I just want this to be all over so I can finally start grieving.”

This egregiously sad example of our present justice system, is but one of many perpetrated by the very system initially designed to protect the innocent.

  3. Why did it take so long to process the it clearly showed it was a hate crime out to hurt somebody. an innocent person enjoying the air and was strucked by a hitch.

  5. Indescribable heartbreak for a teenage daughter waiting to grieve. There is no justice here. Likely there will never be justice for Barbara Kentner. Ms. Kentner, her family and loved ones are now just grist to the mill in the legal bureaucracy disgustingly called the Justice System. The culture of complacency is alive and well among “most” politicians, law enforcement, crown prosecutors, defense lawyers and judges, who are all well looked after by the system meant to serve the everyday people of Canada. “Most” are indifferent to the hardship they cause the victims and survivors, while they do what is convenient for themselves. “Most” do not care justice delayed is justice denied. They will not be called to account for their indifference. The accused is comfortably out on bail while Barbara Kentner’s family and friends are harassed by racists; “most” do nothing about it. The public may never know what deals were made with the other occupants of the automobile used in the attack on Barbara Kentner; deals made for the convenience of “most” in the justice system. The public may never know why this is not being treated as the racist hate crime that it is. “Most” of the justice system does not deserve the tiniest drop of trust or confidence from the Canadian public in the case of Barbara Kentner’s murder.

  6. I am so glad that they have decided to do the trial. Prayers for a fast conviction so your family can have some closure. May your mother rest in the sweetest peace.❤️
