‘I’m prepared to take what the system wants to throw at me’: Labrador land protectors trial day 3

For the third straight day, 17 Labrador land protectors, many of them Inuit, Innu or Southern Inuit, sat and listened to the evidence against them in a week long trial.

All 17 are facing charges of ignoring a court injunction to stay away from the Muskrat Falls hydroelectric project site located about 30 kilometres west of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Labrador, and for entering and occupying parts of the site two years ago.

The charges are civil and have been brought against them by Nalcor Energy, a crown agency of the Newfoundland and Labrador government in charge of getting the dam built.

The people on trial say they are protecting their land, water and traditional foods for themselves and future generations.
