National MMIWG Inquiry sets dates for final submissions

The National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls announced Wednesday that it will hear final submissions in Calgary and Ottawa before commissioners start to write their final report.

According to a release from the inquiry, the hearings are scheduled for Nov. 26-30 in Calgary and Dec. 10-14 in Ottawa.

There are about 100 individuals and groups with standing listed on the inquiry’s website.

They have a direct interest in the subject matter, as well as expertise and a perspective commissioners say will inform their final report.

Chief Commissioner Marion Buller said their contribution is important.

“We are confident that their diversity of perspectives will deepen our understanding of this national tragedy and help inform the development of meaningful recommendations for government,” she said in a release.

The hearings mark the end of evidence gathering for the inquiry, which is due to deliver its conclusion and recommendations to the Trudeau government by April 30, 2019.
