‘Dysfunctional’ Rainbow school board on Manitoulin Island will get worse says grand chief

A school yard brawl on Manitoulin Island has First Nations leaders seething with anger and emotion.

Last week, the hour long brawl saw Indigenous and non-Indigenous fighting outside the school.

Leaders are meeting this weekend to come up with a plan to present to the Rainbow school board to help put a stop to systemic racism.

  1. Islander says:

Real shit… Everyone has known this for YEARS.

  2. Highly one sided response the local FN is only adding fuel to this fire by calling everyone else out instead of looking for a positive inclusive solution.

  3. ..so where exactly is the dysfunction – which is going to get worse?? – as the news headline proclaims?…This is a pretty weak news story and lacks any in depth reporting – interesting to note that both groups – indigenous and non-indigenous – were making racists comments back and forth to each other – so racism exists on both sides of the issue – it is not one-sided the way I read it ? – or if not so why does this not come out in this news “report”.

    1. 6. APTN
This rally and the news coverage is highly reactive. The community of M’Chigeeng itself has had and still has councilors who openly share racist remarks.

Better dig deeper before jumping the gun and presenting one-sided information.

  8. I would like to add to First Nations Trustee Grace Fox suggestion and like the Rainbow Board non-native schools I feel a Student Trustee as well should have a chair at the Board table. I have suggested this in the past. Inclusiveness and Equity

    1. I totally agree Larry as well as a little more support to Aboriginal Support Workers. A student voice will empower our Anishnaawbek students to be heard from grass root level. Truth and Reconciliation is a lot of rebuilding in many facets. Prayers for this process to be followed through and recommendations to be carefully considered. Thinking of all my students, families and staff who take pride being a part of MSS.
