Separate investigations launched into allegations of assault and sexual abuse by RCMP, Manitoba Hydro

APTN News
Two separate investigations are underway to look into allegations of assault and sexual abuse by employees of Manitoba Hydro, and members of the RCMP in communities in northern Manitoba.

In one statement, the RCMP in Manitoba said the province’s Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) will look into conduct of its members dating back to the 1960s.

The Ontario Provincial Police will investigate allegations made against Manitoba Hydro employees going back around the same time.

According to a release from the IIU, the investigation is based on allegations made during the Manitoba Clean Environment Commission (CEC) hearings in Fox Lake Cree Nation that date back to the 1960s in Gillam, located 1,064 km due north of Winnipeg.

Details of the allegations were made public in August when the CEC released a report on the effects of a series of hydro dams on the Nelson, Burntwood, and Churchill river systems.

The case was referred to the IIU by the RCMP said the release.

The release said that the investigation will focus on the actions of RCMP officers in the region.

More to come.
