The federal government announced Tuesday that it is granting the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls a six-month extension to complete its work.

That is a far cry from the two-year $50-million extension the inquiry asked for in early March.

The government also announced that any additional money will have to be worked out.

Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Carolyn Bennett said after consultation with families, provincial and territorial governments it could not grant a long extension.

The inquiry now has until June 2019 to report to the government.
