Jody Wilson-Raybould’s Vancouver occupied over Trans Mountain extension

Supporters of the Protect the Inlet movement occupied the constituency offices of Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould’s in Vancouver Thursday.

The groups say it will not leave until the minister calls them to discuss their concerns over Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project.

Wilson-Raybould was not in the office, however, two of her staff were there when about 30 people came in carrying banners and signs.

“I’m here for my seven-year-old brother and his future, it’s not about if but when there is an oil spill that I’m worried about,” said Cedar George from the Tsleil WauTuth Nation.

This is the latest actions by the Protect the Inlet movement.

More than 200 people have been arrested Kinder Morgan’s tank farm in Burnaby, BC.

Protect the Inlet has also built a traditional watch house near the farm to monitor the companies activities.

More than 40 Indigenous communities along the pipeline’s route support the project, but many other communities in B.C. do not.

Opponents of the pipeline fear potential oil spills along the B.C. coast and argue that Indigenous communities have not given their consent to the project, violating their constitutional rights.

B.C. is also part of a lawsuit against Ottawa arguing there was not proper consultation with Indigenous communities or other stakeholders when the pipeline was reviewed.

If you’re not on the route you don’t have a say. Simple as that.

Oh, right! Only the people directly on the route are going to suffer from global warming, environmental degradation, the killing of the sardines, salmon and salmon, the ruining of our tourist economy and the final destruction of the Southern Resident Orca Pod.

Jared, you are s-o-o-o smart to have thought up that simple (minded) solution.

I want to thank you for this article. I am a Rise n’ Resist Settler Acadian and Metis who was there occupying and we said we would not leave until she called Protect The Inlet to make a meeting with them, not us. We wanted her to make a meeting with PTI as we were appalled she had not done so yet.
In solidarity with all land protectors and defenders
