A look at the Kinder Morgan protests and the arrests that followed

Laurie Hamelin APTN NewsAlmost 100 people in Burnaby have been arrested since Saturday, as anti-pipeline protesters ramp up efforts to stall Kinder Morgan’s expansion project. On Friday, Green Party Leader Elizabeth May and New Democrat MP Kennedy Stewart were among the group taken into custody for protesting the Trans Mountain pipeline. The activists defied a permanent injunction granted to Kinder Morgan last week by B.C. Supreme Court. The court order prohibits any protester from coming within five meters of Kinder Morgan’s work sites.Throughout the week, protesters tied themselves to the gate of Kinder Morgan’s Burnaby tank farm. One by one, RCMP officers removed the protesters and arrested them.“We expect them to make some aggressive moves and that is what they are doing,” said Will George, a member of Protect the Inlet. “We are simply stopping them from entering.”Protect the Inlet is a project that kicked off earlier this month with the construction of a traditional Coast Salish watch house – and thousands of demonstrators marching in opposition to Kinder Morgan’s pipeline expansion project. The oil giant plans to triple the oil flow from Alberta’s tar sands to the B.C. coast.Actual pipeline construction cannot begin until all legal challenges go through the courts, but preliminary work, like clearing trees, is permitted.George and protest organizers have planned daily demonstrations until at least March 26, the deadline given to Kinder Morgan to clear trees before birds begin nesting.“We won’t allow them to bring their heavy machinery, and continue ripping out the trees,” said George, adding he hopes more protesters are arrested.Susan Quipp, one of 100 protesters who was arrested, said she was fed up of writing letters so she decided to take real action against Kinder Morgan.“I just thought no, I have to do something,” she said.Delays in construction are costing Kinder Morgan millions per month.– With files from The Canadian Press

  1. Brian says:

Bringing in all those foreign ships into British Columbia with who knows what onboard is very dangerous. Those product may have been made with child labor or the products may contain asbestos or lead or may be used to hide drugs or some other dangerous items. The only responsible thing to do is shut down all the ports all along the BC coast to protect all Canadians against these dangers brought in from foreign lands.
And don’t get me going on the dangers of the railways, highways, natural gas pipelines from BC, power dams, high voltage electrical line, etc, we need to shut them all down also…

  2. I think the environment needs much better protection than what we are giving it.
The waters off BC have been over fished for years so we really need to shut down all the fisheries to protect our fish stocks in our coastal waters.
Agriculture is destroying the land and displacing our native Indians and wildlife so we also really need to aggressively oppose and shut down all farms, wineries or any other industry which abuses the land for personal profits.
Why are we cutting down the beautiful trees in BC just to make lumber? To do so for jobs and profit is just so wrong and is not what BC is all about.

  5. Burnaby Mountain is situated on Unceded Territory that belongs to and shared by the Squamish, Musqueam, Coast Salish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations Band. Unceded Territory and Land, is a district or region of a city or of a province that has not been conquered nor that has been surrendered to the Federal Government. There will not and never be any negotiations for the request of and or permission to trespass through Unceded Territory by Corporations such as Kinder-Morgan Trans-Mountain Pipeline.

The First Nations didn’t want this project, the people didn’t want this project and neither do I. This country was founded on stolen First Nations Land and Unceded Territory. Stop taking away the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

The meaning of Canadian Citizen which by the way is given by the Federal Government. However, in the eyes of myself and to the First Nations out sheer respect for reconciliation, I am a Settler.

  9. We are Canadians. We are part of the human race that live on Mother Earth in thr beautiful region of British Columbia. Whether we are the workforce in the legal system, the healthworkers, the police, the military, the politicians, the ordinary man and woman and children who work and play ….we are British Columbians. Do we allow a foreign entity to entice us and dissuade us from protecting our land and water? We rise and protect our Mother Earth .

  11. I fully support these protesters. We, Humans, have now entered the Anthropocene era, entirely by our own actions. One would think we would now use our intelligence and leave the remainder of The Oil Sands in the ground as stranded assets and bust our butts bringing on renewables. Future generations are also applauding these protesters.

  12. Why are the Lower Mainland Liberal MP’s so silent on the protests against KM?
