Yukon to spend $1M on new RCMP cold case investigative unit

APTN News
The RCMP in Whitehorse will be setting up a new investigative unit focused on unsolved murdered and missing cases in the Yukon.

Yukon Justice Minister Tracy-Anne McPhee says the historical case unit is needed to help with the unprecedented amount of homicides in the territory.

Since 2000, there have been 35 homicide investigations with 12 remaining unsolved.

The government of Yukon is providing over $1 million over the next three years to fund a three-person unit. The unit’s mandate will also include investigations related to the national inquiry into missing and murdered indigenous women and girls.

The unit is expected to be up and running by the summer.

Last month, the Northwest Territories government earmarked $300,000 to fund a similar RCMP unit to investigate 71 unsolved cases in the territory.
