Nunavut says number of polar bears in the region going up – and so are the hunting quotas

A major polar bear region says it is increasing the polar bear quota for 2018 allowing more animals to be taken by hunters.

A major polar bear region says it is looking to increase the polar bear hunting quota for 2018.

This despite a video that was released in December showing a starving polar bear that garnered international attention as the animal struggled to find food at an old campsite.

It was held up as an example of the negative effects of climate change.

But Nunavut and Greenland say the polar population isn’t just fine – it’s growing.

  1. Gail Marshall says:

As being Aboriginal, I too have great concern for the polar bear. The health of this beautiful animal is out of my control as with many things. I am happy to hear the increase in the population but disagree with the increase in quota.

    1. The polar bear is a species in danger and their number is not increasing at all! This is only about the interest of hunters and the wildlife policy! Their decline is widely commented by observers and scientists in northern Manitoba, so hunted, harassed by conservation officers with double-barreled rifles because of tourism, chased by helicopter at low altitude for taking pictures, I was witnessing unacceptable scenes during a long stay on this territory! I think their territory should be protected. Man has become the greatest predator on the planet in every sense of the word! You need a balance! These animals, like all species, have the right to live on this earth. We must learn to respect nature and to share it! It is a whole system of education that the Ancients master perfectly, especially among the First Nations! To believe that the “modern civilization” has lessons to learn.
