Police will get blamed during missing, murdered women inquiry: Bellegarde

The Canadian Press
WINNIPEG – The National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations says police should brace themselves for some blame in the upcoming inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women.

Speaking to police chiefs from across the country meeting in Winnipeg, Perry Bellegarde said fingers will be pointed during the probe.

He said many will question how police handled cases and whether they do enough when an Indigenous woman is reported missing.

Bellegarde says police need to be prepared to accept they can do more to improve the system.

Saskatoon Police Chief Clive Weighill, head of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, says some of the criticism is justified.

But he says the way police handle cases of missing and murdered Indigenous women has changed in the past decade.
