Crown requests stay of proceedings against Cree woman serving 2nd degree murder sentence

APTN National News
MEDICINE HAT ALTA — The Crown has requested a stay of proceedings against Connie Oakes, a Cree woman who is serving a life sentence for a murder she says she did not commit.

Oakes was convicted of the 2011 killing Medicine Hat resident Casey Armstrong.

The murder case against Oakes was built solely on the confession and testimony of her co-accused, Wendy Scott, a woman with an intellectual disability who has been assessed as having an IQ of 50.

Scott told police she constantly lied and admitted the same while testifying under oath.
