Nine people, including three children, died in a house fire that began late Tuesday night in the fly-in northern Ontario community of Pikangikum, according to community members.

The OPP said in a statement local authorities received a call at about 11:44 p.m. about a residential fire on Dunsford Rd. in Pikangikum First Nation.

The OPP statement said “a number of persons” were killed in the fire and that several others were still unaccounted for.

Two community members told APTN National News that a total of nine people had died in the fire, including three children, all from the same family.

Pikangikum is a fly-in community which sits about 500 kilometres northwest of Thunder Bay.
