Liberal budget praised and panned

Chiefs like it, but some advocates call it smoke and mirrors

The Assembly of First Nations National Chief Perry Bellegarde is calling the Liberal government’s first budget “historic.”

Bellegarde has said the dollars outlined in the budget document will benefit all Canadians and for once, Indigenous peoples too.

But with about $3 billion of the $8.4 billion set aside for Indigenous peoples and communities back-ended to flow the end of the five-year cycle, some are saying maybe this budget isn’t what it appears to be on the surface.
