Manitoba RCMP said Friday a 15-year-old boy had been charged in the murder of 11-year-old Teresa Robinson whose remains were found in a northern Manitoba First Nation.
Robinson’s remains were found in Garden Hill First Nation on May 11, 2015, after she had been reported missing. The young girl was last seen leaving a birthday party in the community.
The RCMP charged the boy with first-degree murder.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of Teresa and we hope that this arrest can bring some closure and peace to Teresa’s family and friends,” said Staff-Sgt. Jared Hall, the officer in charge of Major Crime Services. “Our hearts go out to the community of Garden Hill First Nation and I want to thank them for their assistance during our investigation.”
The male youth, who was charged Friday, cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. He is from the community.
During the 10-month-long investigation, the RCMP took the unusual step of requesting DNA samples from boys and men from Garden Hill.
RCMP officers went door to door asking males aged between 15 and 50-years to allow a sample of their DNA to be taken by investigators.
It is unclear if this tactic played into the arrest of the suspect.
