Liberal candidate Jones stops Conservative candidate Penashue’s attempted comeback

Earlier results show Jones trouncing Penashue

Inuit Liberal candidate Yvonne Jones appears to have beaten former Innu leader and Conservative candidate Peter Penashue who was attempting a comeback.

The first poll results from Newfoundland and Labrador showed that Jones had 77 per cent of the vote early on in the race for the Labrador riding. The gap of her lead led to a quick projection call handing the seat to Jones.

Penashue resigned his intergovernmental affairs minister post in the Stephen Harper government and his seat after it emerged there were donation irregularities with his federal campaign during the 2011 election.

Penashue’s former campaign manager Reg Bowers pleaded guilty earlier this month to two counts under the Canada Elections Act. Bowers pleaded guilty to accepting illegal campaign contributions and for discounted airfares during the 2011 campaign.
