A community in eastern Quebec is in mourning as a Mi’gmaq fisher is declared “lost at sea.”

Listuguj Mi’gmaq government spokesperson Mike Isaac identified the man as 52-year old Lloyd Jacques. Jacques was a crew member aboard a Listuguj-owned fishing vessel when he fell overboard in the early hours of August 14.

The boat was fishing eight miles south of Port Cartier, a town located on the northern shore of the St. Lawrence River. Surete du Quebec, Coast Guard and community vessels had been searching for Jacques until that search was called off this weekend.

Mi’gmaq government offices were closed for a memorial service today in Listuguj, Jacque’s home community.
