A man has fallen overboard from a First Nation owned fishing vessel, says an official from a Quebec Mi’gmaq community.

The incident took place at approximately 3:30 a.m. on a fishing boat owned by the Listuguj Mi’gmaq Government, says executive director Paul Stanley.

“There were a total of five persons on the vessel, four of which are safe and accounted for.” wrote Paul Stanley in a press release. Stanley says Surete du Quebec, Coast Guard and community vessels have joined in the search for the missing man.

“Our prayers are with the family, the rescuers and the community at this time and we would ask that privacy be kept out of respect for the family.”

The boat was fishing eight miles south of Port Cartier, a town located on the northern shore of the St. Lawrence River.
