Fort William First Nation faced racist backlash triggered by bridge burning

A fire damaged a bridge last week that was a major economic link between the Fort William First Nation and its neighbour, Thunder Bay, Ont.

A fire damaged a bridge last week that was a major economic link between the Fort William First Nation and its neighbour, Thunder Bay, Ont.

Since the bridge burning, a rash of racist incidents have swept through the area and a wave of racism washed through social media.

Fort William Chief Georjann Morriseau and the Mayor of Thunder Bay held a joint press conference to try and relieve some of the tension.

APTN anchor Michael Hutchinson spoke with Chief Morriseau about the issue.

    Targeting infrastructure to affect a communities economic activity is a two way street and idle no more has done nothing but turn the average person to support reactionary actions like this. The next Ontario highway or train track blockade should be met with blockades major arteries leading to and from reserves
