The Athabasca Fort Chipewyan First Nation is trying to stop hearings into an oilsands expansion project on their traditional territory.

The Alberta government’s justice review panel is supposed to begin public hearings into Shell Canada’s plans to expand one of their open pit mines.

But the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation is trying to get a court injunction to stop them.

They say the government failed to consult properly over the Jackpine Project.

They want to know more about predicted losses of habitat and wildlife before the hearings go ahead.

  1. I’d like to see all the oil sands in Alberta stopped. The government has been giving the public false and misleading information about the safety of the project for years. It has already poisoned the Athabasca Lake area, something that is being denied and downplayed. It is a blight on Canada and on Canadians and we need to start talking and stop this wound that we are creating before it is too late.
