Strands from rope that hung Riel donated to museum

APTN National News
A piece of Metis history is now home.

Strands of rope believed to have been used to hang Louis Riel have been donated to the Museum of Winnipeg.

The museum is said to have the largest Louis Riel collection on display anywhere.

The bits of rope were donated by the daughter of former Manitoba premier Duff Roblin. They were kept in an envelope labelled with the name “Captain Young.”

Young was the one who escorted Riel from Batoche, Sask., to Regina where he was hanged for treason in 1885.

The museum’s director says they are always excited to receive artifacts like these.
