The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples turned five on Thursday.

The document was written to affirm that Indigenous rights should be protected.

Canada didn’t endorse it until years later and when it did, it did so emphasizing it is merely an aspirational declaration.

Despite this response, the Mohawk community of Kanesatake held a celebration.
