For the third time this year, a First Nations chief from the Northwest Territories has been charged with a sexual offence.

Former Behchoko Chief Leon Lafferty was charged with rape and indecent assault.

The alleged incidents date back to 1979.

Those charges come on the heels of another sexual assault filed against Yellowknives Dene Chief Edward Sangris.

In May, former Tlicho Grand Chief Joe Rabesca was found guilty of sexual assault.

Both those chiefs are expected to appear in court later this month.

I think if these men are sexual perpetrators, the title of Chief should no longer be applied or associated to them at all. To associate a Chief and sexual assault in any context is not only embarrassing but it also suggests that there are a bunch of skinners running the show which is FALSE. Obviously when a person is charged with such an offence, they lose all credibility, positions of power. If a cop, judge, lawyer were charged with sexual assault do you seriously think they’re going to keep those positions? or people’s respect, trust? F**K no! Same with Chiefs.

  2. u00a0these three men are allegedly sexual offenders, their past or present title of CHIEF needs to beu00a0detached from theu00a0
