A scheduled court appearance to face drug trafficking charges didn’t stop one chief from attending the annual assembly of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations.

Key First Nation Chief Clarence Papequash was scheduled to appear in provincial court Thursday, but was instead found at the chief’s gathering.

Papequash’s lawyer appeared in court on his behalf.

Papequash’s brother, a band councillor, remains in police custody awaiting a bail hearing.

Papequash, however, refused to comment on his drug charges when approached by APTN National News

“I have nothing to say to you,” said Papequash.

Papequash, along with 23 others, are charged with drug related offences after a six month RCMP investigation into the trafficking of prescription pills.
