Glooscap election battle continues

GLOOSCAP FIRST NATION, N.S.–A candidate is appealing last month’s by-election on the Glooscap First Nation in Nova Scotia.

Brian Smith, the only candidate not related to band Chief Shirley Clarke, lost in the by-election for band councillor.

The winning councillor, Kristen Halliday, is the son of Coun. Michael Halliday who pulls in nearly $1 million a year in salary and revenues from band contracts.

Smith has filed an appeal claiming voting irregularities.

Band rules require the creation of an appeals board and a special band meeting to review election results.
