Canada says sorry for Inuit relocation

GRISE FIORD, Nunavut— They were cheated, deceived and abandoned thousands of kilometres from their homes and the Canadian government says it is sorry.

Indian Affairs Minister John Duncan says “Canada made a mistake” when Inuit families from Quebec and Nunavut were relocated to the High Arctic in the 1950s.

They were moved to help assert Canada’s claim to sovereignty over the region.

But the painful impact of that transfer is still being felt today.
