For 160 years, First Nation, Inuit and Métis children were taken from their homes and placed in institutions located across the country under the guise of education. What the federal government was doing, in fact, was attempting to assimilate Indigenous children into southern society.


This day is to remember the children who went to these schools, their families and communities.

Manitoba moves to transfer 100 acres of historic land to Red River Métis

Every third weekend in July, hundreds of Red River Métis travel to the historic community of Ste. Madeleine for three days of jigging, jamming and joy. The former town, located near the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border, was home to more than 200 Métis before they were forcibly displaced in the 1930s.

Canada apologizes to nine First Nations after labelling Dakota and Lakota as refugees

Canada’s Crown-Indigenous relations minister has apologized to nine First Nations in Manitoba and Saskatchewan following decades of the Dakota and Lakota being labelled as refugees. Gary Anandasangaree said Monday at a ceremony at Whitecap Dakota First Nation south of Saskatoon that the groups should have been formally recognized as First Nations in Canada.

In honour of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, APTN, CBC/Radio-Canada, and the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation are partnering to produce a 90-minute multilingual commemoration. The gathering will be broadcast live across the country from Parliament Hill, on the unceded territory of the Anishinaabe Algonquin Nation.

 

APTN News will be live with hosts Creeson Agecoutay in Winnipeg and Dennis Ward in Ottawa before the gathering to share more about National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
