Elder Roger Ellis returns to Mayo, Yukon where a flash of lightning changed his life forever

Elder Roger Ellis returns to Mayo, Yukon for the first time since 1964 when he was struck by lightning.

The year was 1964.

Roger Ellis was a 14-year-old living in the town of Mayo, Yukon, 400 kilometres north of Whitehorse.

He remembers it was a rainy summer – with many lightning and thunderstorms.

One day he went out for a walk that would change his life forever and take him years to recover from.

The lies. Are horrible ! But you were meant to be a healer, and your strength is important. This great pain didn’t make you a horrible person , you didn’t let it .

  2. Thank you for sharing this story. I shared it with my young son to help him understand the personal impact of residential schools.
