Montreal police a central theme at Quebec inquiry into Indigenous relations

The Quebec inquiry into Indigenous relations got an earful from Indigenous people Wednesday on how they feel Montreal police treat them.

“Every time we sit down at a table, if we get invited, it’s like we’re being told what to do and how to do it rather than listening to all the valuable information that we’re bringing forward,” testified Vicky Boldo, of the Montreal Urban Aboriginal Community Strategic Network.

This is in sharp contrast to almost three years ago, when Montreal police signed an agreement with a grassroots group.

Sensitivity training for officers was agreed to.

“During the training there were many officers laughing and not listening, and they were not pulled aside by the superiors,” said Rachel Deutsch, of the First People’s Justice Centre. “There was no consequence for them.”
