Land defender and RCMP in standoff over Trans Mountain Pipeline

Land defender climbed up on roof of trailer to keep RCMP from hauling it away.

The trailer is known as Camp Cloud – a makeshift surveillance post set up by land defenders trying to stop the expansion of the Trans Mountain Pipeline.

The camp has been set up for about two months with no incident until Tuesday night when police tried to remove the trailer according to land defender, Yuni Urchin.

Urchin climbed up on the roof of the trailer to stop police from moving it at the gates of Kinder Morgan’s tank farm in Burnaby, B.C.

“Just wanna show you there are two police here, hiding here, sneaking behind my back trying to get up here,” said Urchin on Facebook Tuesday night.

When APTN arrived to Camp Cloud Wednesday the RCMP were still on the scene but there had been no arrests.

As for Urchin, she spent the night on the roof of the trailer and said she wasn’t going anywhere.

A tow truck was hooked up to the trailer ready to haul it away but couldn’t because Urchin was on the roof.

The federal government approved Kinder Morgan’s expansion of the Trans Mountain Pipeline in late 2016, allowing the company to add a second pipeline from Edmonton to Burnaby.

  3. Community support and mutual aid let land defenders live and able to do front line WORK to protect our enviroment, treaties, ect. What they are doing is WORK. It’s a FULL TIME JOB. The community that they are apart of and contribute to keep us/them warm and fed. The community with the same goals take care of each other. They are doing work not everyone in the revolution can be apart of. But everyone helps out in ways they can. That’s how a community lives. Also it’s a lie, you cannot clean up an oil spill. With every pipeline there is always gonna be a spill somewhere effecting the eco-system wherever it touches. And it will be forever damaged.

    1. The defenders of sacred lands are brave, honest and loyal to mother earth and need respect ,because we have , them at sission mine project ,look it up,

    1. Stay in school or return, maybe try reading a book…once you learn the basics it will get easier as long as you practice…

  5. Pull her down by force and throw her in jail!! This activism crap in Canada has to stop this country in not a park. People need to work companies need to get their product to market. Oil and gas is used every single day and makes all of our lives comfortable but most people on the coast of B.C. take that for granted. Such a shame. Don’t these people have jobs to go to?? How can they afford to protest and live at the same time?? Government handouts?? Welfare?? Funded by out of country influences??

    1. These people are defending their land and water, asshole. This oil, or diluted bitumen in reality, is headed to places other then Canada. Your tin-foil hat conspiracy theories are hollow and baseless, these people put their bodies on the line for the good of the planet. It’s none of your concern how they can “afford” to take time out of their life to engage in peaceful acts of resistance. When your drinking water is poisoned by the toxic mix of chemicals they mix the bitumen with, you’ll be asking yourself, “how could we afford not to protect our water”? You can’t live without clean water. Wake up.

    2. You are the one who should be arrested… This woman is trying to help save not only BC but in reality, the planet…

    3. The world has to change. If you don’t like it, too bad. The environment is screaming at us to do something, but others like you, don’t like to be inconvenienced. You can continue to be herded like sheep, or do something to save humanity from the wall it is careening itself into.

    4. Ben, what a shame that you think “living” is defined by the industrialized culture humanity has devolved into. Modern culture is a sick abstraction from Reality; Reality being the forces and cycles of Life itself. Long after humanity is gone, Reality will persist, in the fundamental elements of Life, and I can guarantee those fundamentals will have nothing to do with jobs, governments or any of the other petty human conceptions you seem hung up on.
Believe it or not, humans have lived rich, meaningful, complex, lives for thousands of years pre-industrialization. Believe it or not, it is possible to live a comfortable life without such a gross dependence on oil. You have fallen prey to the oil industry’s propaganda. Your ignorance is not only astounding, it’s insulting. I suggest you educate yourself on the myriad cultures that exist outside of the industrialized oil bubble you live in.
A good place to start is the documentary “PUMP”.

    5. Your off base there pal. This country made a commitment at the Paris climate talks . The expension of the tar sands means we will not meet our commitments and therfore will have to pay a huge carbon tax therfore subsidizing the oil industry. F*ck the jobs we are killing the planet. Try to wake up and smell reality will ya. Are you loving the extreme weather we have been getting? Don’t you want a future for your children?

    6. The spill at Bella Bella was never cleaned up. It destroyed two rich clam beds. Govt. of BC had contracted with a private company to do clean ups but they never turned up-. So much for world class spill response. The Salish sea and the west coast of BC are rich in all kinds of sea food. Members of my family make their living fishing there. Others are in the tourism industry there. They deserve to have their jobs just as much as you. What are you going to eat when all the sea food is gone.

    7. Clearly u don’t have a clue how much of an impact on this earth the oil industry has on it and your shallow view of employment. Go be a doctor, go build eco homes, or something that improves quality of life instead of further relying on corporate industry that clearly has no conscience….It’s a choice to work in the oil industry, not a right.

    8. You don’t show anything but racism. Don’t even have the balls to put your last name. First Nation people have rights. Go back where you came from loser.
