Police shooting in Umiujaq, Nunavik leaves man dead

APTN News
A police shooting in the Inuit community of Umiujaq has left a 22-year-old man dead.

Umiujaq is a small community on the eastern shores of Hudson Bay in northern Quebec.

The man’s name has not been released.

According to a release sent by Quebec’s Bureau of Independent Investigation (BII) an agency that investigates injuries and deaths that occur during police intervention, officers arrived at the man’s house earlier in the day to take him into custody.

The shooting occurred when the man left his home carrying knives and was heading toward the community centre where an event was taking place.

The release said shots were fired when police ordered him to stop and he turned and walked toward them.

He was then transported to the hospital where he died.

Quebec’s BII is in charge of investigating the incident.

Why can’t they shoot them on the leg? Out of patience Eh! Just Why? That was my 2nd time of witnessing this kind incident (June 10 2017) And (December 28 2017) They do so much of shoooting But why? To kill shooting them like they’re Caribou’s? Come On! Get tasers or something! <\3 This has to STOP!!

Nunavimmiut do not have any resources to turn to in times of distress. It is unfortunate that it had to end this way. It took hours for the police and the young man’s father to try to help him and try to talk him into surrendering but he was determined not to. I feel sorry that he felt that it was the end and he may have thought that nobody could help him. May there be peace for the family and for them to feel the love of others. And that the officers who were on duty feel the compassion; and gratefulness that they were there when nobody else could handle the awful situation
